TMJ / TMD Evaluation & Treatment

Jaw pain, facial tension, headaches, clicking, and limited movement can have several possible causes. A focused dental evaluation helps us determine whether the temporomandibular joints, chewing muscles, bite, or habits such as clenching may be contributing.

What Is TMD?

TMD refers to problems affecting the jaw joints and the muscles that help move the jaw. Symptoms can be temporary or persistent and may overlap with headaches, ear pressure, neck tension, or tooth wear.

Why an Evaluation Matters

There is no single TMJ treatment that fits every patient. We look at symptoms, jaw movement, muscle tenderness, bite relationships, tooth wear, and relevant history before recommending conservative care.

Symptoms We Commonly Discuss

When Jaw Problems Affect Daily Life

Pain & TendernessJaw soreness, facial muscle tension, discomfort with chewing, or pain that worsens with clenching.
Clicking or Limited MotionPopping, grinding, catching, difficulty opening widely, or episodes where the jaw feels stuck.
Headaches & Tooth WearRecurring tension-type headaches, worn teeth, chipped edges, or morning symptoms may point toward nighttime clenching or grinding.

Conservative Treatment First

Depending on the cause, recommendations may include a custom nightguard or splint, behavior changes, reducing hard or chewy foods temporarily, jaw relaxation strategies, bite evaluation, or coordination with another healthcare provider.

Helpful Daily Habits

Avoid unnecessary clenching, limit gum chewing, keep teeth apart when the jaw is at rest, use good posture, and pay attention to habits that repeatedly load the jaw joints and muscles.

Jaw Pain Can Have More Than One Cause

Ear symptoms, headaches, facial pain, and jaw discomfort do not always originate from the TMJ. If your findings suggest another source, we may recommend evaluation by an appropriate medical or dental specialist.
