Regular Exams & Cleaning
Regular dental exams and professional teeth cleanings are an important part of maintaining your oral health. During your regular dental exam, we will:
- Check for any problems that you may not see or feel
- Look for cavities or other signs of tooth decay
- Inspect your teeth and gums for gingivitis and signs of periodontal disease
- Perform a thorough professional teeth cleaning
Your regular dental exam will take about 45 minutes. Each exam includes a detailed dental cleaning in which we clean, polish, and rinse your teeth to remove tartar and plaque buildup from the tooth’s surface.
Visiting our dental office every six months gives you the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about your oral health. Routine dental exams and cleanings help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues before they become more serious. Regular exams are offered by appointment only, so please contact Peosta Dental today to schedule your next dental checkup and professional teeth cleaning.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a conservative and affordable cosmetic dentistry treatment used to repair slightly chipped, discolored, cracked, or crooked teeth. During the dental bonding procedure, a tooth-colored filling material is placed onto your tooth to improve its appearance. The filling bonds directly with your natural tooth and comes in a variety of shades designed to closely match your existing teeth.
Tooth bonding can also be used for dental fillings instead of traditional silver amalgam fillings. Many patients prefer bonded fillings because the white composite material is much less noticeable than silver restorations. Bonded fillings may be used on both front and back teeth depending on the location and extent of tooth decay.
Dental bonding is often less expensive than other cosmetic dental treatments and can usually be completed in a single office visit. Although bonding materials can stain or chip more easily than porcelain veneers or crowns, damaged bonding can typically be repaired quickly during one appointment.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge may be used to replace one or more missing teeth, help maintain the natural shape of your face, and reduce stress on your bite and jaw joints.
A bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth that are custom-made to look natural and restore proper oral function. Dental bridges literally “bridge” the gap where teeth are missing. Bridges may be created from porcelain, gold, alloys, or a combination of materials and are bonded to surrounding teeth for support.
The long-term success of a dental bridge depends on the health of the surrounding teeth, gums, and jawbone supporting the restoration. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene and regular dental visits are essential to keeping your bridge and natural teeth healthy and strong.

Dentures

Dentures are natural-looking removable replacement teeth designed to restore your smile and improve oral function. There are two main types of dentures: full dentures and partial dentures.
Full dentures are provided when all natural teeth have been removed, while partial dentures are attached to a metal framework connected to your remaining natural teeth to fill gaps left by missing teeth.
Just like natural teeth, dentures require proper daily care. Patients should use a gentle denture cleanser, keep dentures moist when not in use, and maintain healthy gums and tongue through regular oral hygiene practices.
Tooth Extractions
There are times when it becomes necessary to remove a tooth. In some cases, a baby tooth may have long or misshapen roots that prevent it from falling out naturally. In other situations, severe tooth decay, infection, trauma, orthodontic treatment, or impacted wisdom teeth may require tooth extraction.
When a tooth needs to be removed, your dentist may perform the extraction during a regular appointment or schedule a separate visit depending on the complexity of the procedure. During the extraction process, the tooth is carefully separated from the surrounding ligament and removed from its socket within the jawbone.
Following an extraction, neighboring teeth may begin shifting, potentially causing problems with chewing, bite alignment, or jaw joint function. To help prevent complications, your dentist may recommend replacing the extracted tooth with a dental implant, bridge, or denture.

Dental Fillings

Traditional dental fillings were commonly made from silver amalgam due to their durability and strength, especially for back teeth that experience heavy chewing pressure.
Modern dental fillings now include ceramic and composite resin materials that closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth. Tooth-colored composite fillings are frequently used on front teeth where aesthetics are important, but they may also be appropriate for back teeth depending on the extent of decay.
There are two primary types of dental fillings:
- Direct fillings, which are placed during a single visit
- Indirect fillings, such as inlays, onlays, and veneers, which typically require multiple visits
Indirect restorations are often recommended when a tooth has too much damage for a traditional filling but does not require a full crown.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride treatments are highly effective in helping prevent cavities and tooth decay while strengthening tooth enamel. Fluoride also helps reduce plaque buildup and protects teeth against acid attacks from bacteria and food.
Professional fluoride treatments are quick, painless, and typically take only a few minutes. After treatment, patients may be instructed to avoid eating, drinking, or rinsing for at least 30 minutes to allow the fluoride to fully absorb into the enamel.
Depending on your oral health needs, fluoride treatments may be recommended every three, six, or twelve months as part of your preventive dental care plan.

Dental Implant Restorations

If you are missing one or more teeth, replacing them is important for maintaining proper oral health, bite stability, and facial appearance. Missing teeth can affect chewing, speaking, and may even cause surrounding teeth to shift over time.
Dental implants are one of the most durable and natural-looking tooth replacement options available. An implant restoration consists of a titanium implant that replaces the tooth root and a custom-made dental crown placed on top to restore appearance and function.
Dental implants can also be used to stabilize dentures and replace missing teeth for patients with removable partial dentures. With proper care and regular dental visits, implants can provide long-lasting results and help restore confidence in your smile.
Sports Mouthguards
Whether you wear braces or not, protecting your teeth during sports and recreational activities is essential. Sports mouthguards help protect teeth, gums, and jaw structures from injury during physical activity.
The American Dental Association recommends wearing a mouthguard during any contact sport. There are several types of mouthguards available, including:
- Pre-made mouthguards
- Boil-and-bite mouthguards
- Custom-made dental mouthguards
Custom mouthguards created by your dentist offer the best fit, comfort, and protection while allowing you to breathe and speak properly during activity.

Nightguards for Bruxism

If you frequently wake up with jaw pain, headaches, earaches, or notice signs of teeth grinding, you may suffer from bruxism. Many patients grind or clench their teeth during sleep without realizing it.
Left untreated, bruxism can lead to:
- Worn teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Jaw pain
- Headaches
- Tooth fractures
Custom nightguards are a simple, non-invasive solution designed to protect your teeth while you sleep. Made specifically for your smile, nightguards cushion your bite and prevent damaging contact between upper and lower teeth.
Root Canal Therapy
In the past, a severely infected tooth often needed to be removed. Today, root canal therapy allows dentists to save many infected teeth while eliminating pain and infection.
When a tooth becomes cracked or develops deep decay, bacteria can enter the inner pulp tissue and cause infection. If untreated, the infection may spread and lead to abscesses, swelling, bone damage, and serious oral health complications.
During root canal treatment, the infected tissue is carefully removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is restored with a filling or dental crown. With proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, a tooth treated with root canal therapy can last for many years.

Dental Sealants

Sometimes brushing alone is not enough to fully clean the deep grooves and crevices found on molars and premolars. These hard-to-reach areas are especially vulnerable to cavities and tooth decay.
Dental sealants are protective plastic coatings that bond to the chewing surfaces of teeth and help prevent bacteria and plaque from accumulating in deep grooves. Sealants make teeth easier to clean and provide an added layer of protection against cavities.
Sealants are commonly recommended for children after permanent molars erupt, but adults may also benefit from sealants depending on their oral health needs.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surfaces of teeth and improve the appearance of your smile. Veneers are an excellent cosmetic dentistry option for correcting:
- Chipped teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Tooth discoloration
- Misshapen teeth
- Minor alignment issues
Veneers are crafted from durable tooth-colored materials that closely resemble natural enamel. Once placed, veneers provide a long-lasting, stain-resistant solution for achieving a more confident and attractive smile.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the third molars located at the back of the mouth and often appear during the late teenage years or early adulthood. In many cases, wisdom teeth become impacted due to lack of space in the jaw.
Impacted wisdom teeth may lead to:
- Swelling and gum tenderness
- Jaw pain
- Infections
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Damage to neighboring teeth
Wisdom teeth extractions are commonly performed during the late teens or early twenties before the roots fully develop. During the procedure, the area is numbed for comfort, and the impacted tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal. Following treatment, our team will provide detailed instructions to help ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery.
